Message from Head of Department

Dear Students and Parents,

Greetings & welcome to the Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering (EXTC) Department of Agnel Charities’ Fr. C. Rodrigues Institute of Technology (FCRIT), Vashi, Navi Mumbai. EXTC department offers Bachelor of Engineering (undergraduate degree) and PhD degree programs. It is accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) which is a reputed benchmarking body for Engineering Institutes.

The first focus in the EXTC Department is the learner. As quoted by Alvin Toffler- writer, futurist & businessman, “ The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.” Therefore, “ learning & re-learning” forms an essential part of the graduating years.

In recent times, we are witnessing disruption in technology, environment, as well as education. There is a paradigm shift from traditional teaching-learning methods in engineering education in the post-pandemic era, mainly due to three reasons: advent of technology, access to information and global reach-outs. Therefore, keeping in view the changed attitudes of learners, and the skill-sets that are required from graduate engineers, the EXTC Department makes continuous efforts in order to meet Industry/Academia expectations. We have very well qualified faculty, who have graduated from reputed Institutes like IIT Bombay, VJTI etc. We have five faculty members who are Ph.D. and four are pursuing Ph.D., one of them on the verge of completion. The laboratories have qualified laboratory assistants and are well-equipped. EXTC Department has two project laboratories, apart from a dedicated R&D laboratory, for students’ exploratory work. Our department mission is to provide quality education to our students and to provide a holistic environment for their overall personal development. Professional bodies like the Institute of Telecommunication Engineers (IETE) and Institute of Electronics & Electrical Engineers (IEEE) are effectively functioning in the department.

If we speak of the opportunities of career growth in Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering, several thrust areas which have received prime focus in recent years, can be listed. Some of the important areas in which there is a growing demand of the EXTC engineers today and in near future are:

• 5G deployment

• Internet of Things deployment

• Cognitive and software defined networks

• Fiber optics deployment

• Satellite communication

• Semiconductor development

• Cyber security

• Regulatory developments

In the Indian context, this is a golden period for engineering, especially EXTC, due to the favorable Government policies, the Make-in-India initiative and rising costs in competitive market; especially the consumer electronics segment. The recent Chandrayaan-3 mission has proved that the strength of the Indian talent is incredible. The enormous growth in the Telecommunication market in India is propelled by some of the very well designed futuristic policies.

Therefore, having qualified and trained professionals in these fields is the need of the hour. Providing good Industry exposure to the students, giving them good hands-on knowledge of their field, practicing innovative methods for teaching-learning, keen involvement in students through mentoring structure, encouragement for Internships and extra-curricular activities are some of the best practices that are followed at the department. Research culture is growing in the department with the faculty collaborating with Industry/Government Organizations/Research Organization for carrying out consultancy and funded projects. The Department has received a research grant of around Ninety Lakhs so far under various heads. Students are definitely the beneficiaries of these research opportunities. ;

I sincerely hope that the learner-centric environment in the Department will facilitate skill enhancement in you/your ward; with the adequate nurturing of knowledge and care.
